The farming operation of D & R Durno & Sons began at Auchorachan Farm in Glenlivet in 1953 when Duncan Durno took the tenancy on the Crown Estate unit. The 2863 acre hill farm is currently run by the late Duncan Durno’s son Leslie, and his son Michael.
Farm policy over the years has always been the production of top quality livestock, whether that be the store cattle sold as yearlings from the 160 strong suckler cow herd, or the prime lambs sold from our 600 North Type Blackface ewes.
Commercial show calves have always been shown from the farm, gaining considerable success over the years, having won championships at all local summer shows as well as at the Royal Highland Show and the Royal Northern Spring Show. Calves sold from the farm have also gone on and won championships for new owners at all the major national shows including Smithfield, The Scottish Winter Fair and the Aberdeen Christmas Classic.
We have always had a keen interest in pedigree cattle, and are now involved in breeding Simmental, Charolais, Limousins, Aberdeen Angus, and Salers. The Small herds of Charolais and Limousins have been on the farm since the early 1990’s, the Aberdeen Angus and Salers are only just being established, and the Simmentals were introduced in 2002. The Simmentals have already been a great success, having been Overall Champion and 20,000gns top price at the Perth Bull Sales in February 2010. Our commercial herd has always been made up of homebred replacements and we pay great attention to herd bio security, we are long standing members of Hi Health-Herdcare, and have been accredited free of BVD since 2004, and we have never seen a clinical case of Johnes on the farm, we have attained level 1 status for Johnes.
